JET SKIS - THE HISTORY
Although most people think of the name
'jet ski' to refer to any type of personal watercraft with pivoting handlepoles, jet-ski is actually the brand name of personal watercraft that is manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. A man by the name of Clayton Jacobsen II invented the jet ski. In 1973, Kawasaki was the first company to commercially produce and sell jet skiis. Thus a sport was born.
The first jet ski model allowed one person to maneuver a small boat while standing up. Kawasaki expanded on the first stand-up model jet ski by introducing a two-person model with lean-in "sport" style handling. They later intoduced a two passenger 'sit-down' model. Realizing a good thing, other companies like
Polaris, Seadoo, Yamaha, and Bombardier have joined in designing and producing jet skis. The term 'jet ski' stuck, and most people now use it as a generic term to refer to any brand of this watercraft vehicle.
The last thirty years has seen an evolution in jet ski design. Jet skis that allow up to three people to ride and that can tow a water skier are being manufactured. Speeds can now reach up to 60 mph and are complimented by improved mobility.
Jet skiing has become a worldwide sport in both freestyle and racing. The lure of speed and mobility combine to make jet skiing a hugely popular sport for water enthusiasts.
