Aground
This is what you call it if your watercraft is making contact with the bottom of the water
Beam
The width of a vessel at its widest point
Bow
The front of the watercraft
Capsize
When the watercraft flips on its side or completely upside down. Not a good thing.
Course
The direction a watercraft is moved through the water
Dock
Where you secure a watercraft
Downcurrent
The direction that the current is flowing
Downwind
You guessed it, the direction the wind is blowing
Draft
How deep the water needs to be to float a watercraft
Embark
To go on board a vessel
EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon)
A transmitter that is used in a time of distress
Fenders
This is a cushioning device that is used to prevent damage. It is placed between watercraft or between a vessel and a dock
Forward
Towards the bow (front of the watercraft)
Give-Way Vessel
The watercraft that is required to keep away from other vessels by either stopping, slowing, or changing course
Gunwale (pronounced gunnel)
The upper edge of a vessel's side
Hull
The shell structure of the watercraft
Lanyard
A cord that is used for fastening
Leeward
Downwind (the direction the wind is blowing)
LOA (lenght overall)
The length of the hull without anything attatched to it
Marina
A place that offers commercial services for water vessels
Moor
When you keep a vessel stationary by either using an anchor or tying it to something
Pier
A structure that goes into the water from the shore that watercraft can dock at
Port
The left side of a watercraft
Stand-On Vessel
The watercraft that maintains its course and velocity (unless the give-way boat is not doing what is should be to avoid collision)
Starboard
The right side of a watercraft
Steering Control
The way you control the steering nozzle on a PWC
Steering Nozzle
The device on PWC that is used to direct the stream of water to the right or left, steering the watercraft
Stern
The back of a watercraft
Underway
The vessel is moving through the water
Upstream
The opposite direction that the current is flowing
Upwind
The opposite direction the wind is blowing (against the wind)
Vessel
Any type of vehicle that can be used to move on water
Wake
The waves that watercraft create as it moves through the water
